Disclaimer & Data Sources

Where the data comes from.

Database Status

The Vault is actively growing and does not yet cover every hip hop album or mixtape ever released. Currently 81 albums and 36 mixtapes — a fraction of the full catalog. New releases are detected automatically, and classic titles are being backfilled continuously.

Album & Mixtape Metadata

Where album data comes from

Album and mixtape metadata — titles, artists, release years, labels, and related information — is sourced from MusicBrainz and Discogs, two of the most comprehensive open music databases available. Both are community-maintained and regularly updated.

Cover art is fetched from the iTunes Search API (Apple's free, public endpoint) and cached locally for fast loading. When iTunes doesn't have a match, we fall back to a placeholder.

Reviews

Where reviews come from

We aggregate critical reviews — scores and excerpts — from the following publications:

Pitchfork
Metacritic
Rolling Stone
AllMusic
HipHopDX
NME
RapReviews
Complex

Scores from different publications use different scales — some rate out of 10, others out of 100, others use letter grades or star ratings. We normalize all scores to a common 10-point scale before averaging. The aggregated score shown on each album page is a straight average of all normalized scores we have on file.

Not every album has reviews from every source. Coverage depends on what each publication chose to review and whether their archives are accessible. Some albums have a single review; others have eight.

How the Pipeline Works

New albums, detected automatically

01

Daily detection

Every morning at 6 AM UTC, the pipeline scans for newly released hip hop albums and mixtapes using metadata from music databases and publication feeds.

02

Review fetching

Reviews for detected releases are fetched automatically from each source. For new releases, this happens as publications post them — which can take days or weeks after the release date.

03

Classic backfill

Albums from earlier decades are continuously backfilled — we work backwards through hip hop history, adding titles and fetching the critical record for each one.

04

Minimum threshold

An album is published to the Vault once it has at least one confirmed review. Albums in the pipeline with no reviews yet are queued and rechecked automatically.

Missing something?

The Vault is incomplete — by design, we're filling it in. If there's an album or mixtape you think belongs here and isn't showing up, send us the details at contact.thehiphopvault@gmail.com. Include the artist name, title, and release year and we'll add it to the pipeline.
